Primary 2/3 (2017-18)

101_1672A big hello from P2/3 and welcome to our class page, we hope you find it useful!

Term 4 (April – June)

We cannot believe it’s nearly the end of Primary 2 and Primary 3 for us!

Literacy and English – This term we will be finishing off our active literacy programme for spelling and phonics. We will continue reading for fluency and expression and looking closely at comprehension skills. In writing, we will finish off our imaginative farm stories before moving onto another big write called ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We will be looking at writing poems, reports and a formal letter through our big write this term and we look forward to the opportunity to practise using all our skills in our writing.

French – In French we will be learning about different foods starting with fruit and vegetables! We will also get the chance to learn vocabulary for personal information such as siblings and pets.

Numeracy and Mathematics – This term we are looking to finish multiplication and division before moving onto money (P3) and addition and subtraction to 20 (P2), as well as money. We will have plenty of opportunity for problem solving and mental maths. We will also be looking at angle, symmetry and pattern this term and a little bit of probability too!

Health and Wellbeing – In Physical Education we will focusing on Athletics and getting ourselves ready for sports day –  before doing a little bit of gymnastics to finish the term off. We will also be looking closely at Road Safety this term and Bike Safety in preparation for the summer holidays. We will be setting for Sex Education as well.

Social Subjects – Our topic for Term 4 will be Knights and Castles (as chosen by the children). We will be learning about different types of castles (Motte and Bailey Castles vs Stone Castles) and their features. We will also have the opportunity to explore the inside and outside of the castle and make our own working drawbridge. We will then look at knights and the process of becoming a knight and what weapons and armour they have/use. This topic will let us look back at the lives of people who work inside a castle and what different jobs they can do.

Expressive Arts – In Drama, we will complete a BBC Let’s Move series on Knights and Castles. We will also be taking part in role play, hot seating and mime in relation to our topic. In Music, we will be continuing to use our beautiful singing voices to practise our assembly songs. We will have the opportunity to explore different colours, textures and patterns in Art.

Technologies – This term, we will focus on design and craft technology. We will be using different materials to make working drawbridges and might even get a chance to make some shields too as part of our topic!

Religious and Moral Education – We are starting this term by looking at the story of Buddha and some Buddhist stories and tales. We will finish off by having a look at some values lessons on persistence, resilience and respect for others.

Term 3 (January – March)

We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas break!

Literacy and English – This term we will be continuing our active literacy programme and learning our new phonemes and common words. All our groups will look at alternative endings and inference for our comprehension skills. For the first part of this term, we will be reading ‘Room on the Broom’ in Scots language. We will be taking part in performing this at our Scottish celebration. We will have ample opportunities to write imaginative stories, personal pieces and functional writing throughout the term. The second part of this term, we will read a class novel of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ which relates to our topic ‘On The Farm’.

French – We will be focusing on the weather this term in French as well as learning numbers to 20 (P2) and numbers to 30 (P3).

Numeracy and Mathematics – This term we are looking at subtraction to 100, multiplication and division (P3) and addition and subtraction to 20 (P2), as well as patterns and relationships. We will have the opportunity to look at fractions and splitting things into halves and quarters. After all this hard maths, we will look at time and calendars. We will still have the opportunities for problem solving and mental maths! What a busy term we have in front of us!

Health and Wellbeing – In Physical Education we will focusing on Athletics and taking part in a mini Olympics. We will be learning about massage and yoga and how this can help us relax!

Social Subjects – Our topic for Term 3 will be On The Farm. We will be learning about the different types farm animals and how they help us. We will be exploring the journey from source to consumer and investigating the pros and cons of importing food. We’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit a dairy farm to see what farmer life is like and also go on our school trip this term! How exciting! This topic will be good for exploring skills for life and work.

Expressive Arts – The children will be looking at the work of Steven Brown and his McCoo pictures in Art. They will be looking closely at colour and line for this. In Drama, we will complete a BBC Let’s Move series on Room on the Broom, as well as preparing for our school Scottish celebration assembly and our class assembly.

Science – For term 3 we will be learning about Planet Earth and the changing states of water (P2) and energy sources and food chains (P3).

Technologies – This term, we will focus on food technology in relation with our topic of the farm. We will have the chance to make some foods and look at food hygiene.

Religious and Moral Education – We are starting this term by looking at the story of Moses and who he was. We will look at the 10 commandments and how they are still relevant today. At the end of the term, we will be looking at the Easter story and why we celebrate Easter.

A really busy term for P2/3 with all our lovely trips and assemblies!

 

Term 2 (October – December) 

Literacy and English – This term we will be doing a Big Write called Operation Rocket Squad. We will be looking at the life of a tiny alien called Zag and helping him to write instructions to get home, creating posters and looking at questioning. We will focus on using connectives to join our sentences and question marks to extend our understanding. We will also further our knowledge on capital letters by looking at pronouns and giving explanations. We have lots to get through this term!

French – We will be focusing on the weather this term in French. This will enable us to complete our morning routine in French too!

Numeracy and Mathematics – This term we are finishing off numbers to 100 (P2) and numbers to 1000 (P3). We will then look at estimating and rounding and learning about different types of measurement. Primary 2 children will also be completing some data handling, and learning to create graphs of their own. As a class we will then start a new topic of fractions and continue this into term 3. The children will have multiple opportunities for mental maths and problem solving, throughout the term.

Health and Wellbeing – In Physical Education we will focusing on Dance and ball skills – Tennis. We will be learning about drug and substance misuse as well as looking at people who help us (IDL).

Social Subjects – Our topic for Term 2 will be People Who Help Us. We will be learning about the different types of people (emergency services) that can help us but also looking closer to home and who around about us can we go to for help if we needed it.

Expressive Arts – since P2/3 will be taking part in this years Christmas nativity, our expressive arts: dance, drama, music and art will all be covered within this.

Science – For term 2 we will be learning about Materials and looking at recycling different materials.

Technologies – This term, we will be creating Christmas cards and learning about word processing and Microsoft PowerPoint in ICT.

Religious and Moral Education – We are starting this term by looking at Diwali and how it is celebrated. We will finish term 2 by looking at Christmas and how it is celebrated throughout the world.

 

We are looking forward to the nativity rush this term! 

Term 1 (August – October)

Literacy and English – This term we will be looking at The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. This book explores the themes of friendship and kindness, which we will be looking at very closely! The children will also look at Goldilocks and the Three Bears for their writing, and have lots of opportunities to work on our capital letters, full stops and our adjectives – to make our writing more interesting. Reading skills such as predicting, inferring and summarizing and paraphrasing will be taught during this book.

Numeracy and Mathematics – This term we are finishing off subtraction to 10 (P2) and looking at ways to handle any data (P3). We are going to introduce numbers to 100 (P2) and numbers to 1000 (P3) and be able to recognise numbers before, after and in between. We will also be looking at furthering our knowledge on 2D and 3D shape and recognising their features. We will be working on our problem solving and mental maths throughout the term.

Health and Wellbeing – In Physical Education we will be focusing on ball skills and fitness. For ball skills we will be looking at different ways to move with a ball, pass a ball and catch the ball. In fitness, we will be have the opportunity to take part in a series of 5 fitness station lessons that will help improve our speed, stamina, control, agility and balance. For our Health and Wellbeing lessons, we are currently learning about personal hygiene and the importance of keeping ourselves clean and healthy. We will also be taking part in the Road Safety Calendar Competition.

Expressive Arts – In Art we will focus on drawing – self portraits for P2 and observational drawings using buildings (P3). We will learn about pitch – high and low, loud and soft using ABC Music. In Drama and Dance, we are looking at Autumn using the Let’s Move programme and we will be creating short sequences and working in groups.

Social Studies – Our topic for our first term is “Toys and Teddy Bears.” This will have focus on Literacy, Science and Social Studies. We will be looking at the history of toys and teddy bears and what our parents/grandparents used to play with when they were younger. The children will be comparing these toys to their own, more modern toys as well as writing about their own favourite toy. The children will have the opportunity to create their own moving toy and look at the forces behind movement.

French – Our main aims for French this term is to have a short conversation in French that includes a greeting, being able to recognise the primary and secondary colours in French and to focus on the weather – so we can complete our daily weather chart in French along with our morning routine!

Science – During this term, we will be learning about Forces. P2 will be looking specifically at push and pull as a force, while P3 engage in the force of magnetism!

Technologies – This term, the children will be looking at IT technologies and being able to log on and off of the computer. This will get the children used to the keyboard and mouse. We will also be creating a split pin toy.

Religious and Moral Education – This term, we are looking at Ramadan and Islam for RME. We will be exploring the prayer rugs, the mosque and the Qur’an.

We are going to be super busy this term!
