Primary 2/3

Welcome to our class page for Primary 2/3. We are going to be learning lots of exciting things this year and we look forward to sharing them with you.

Term 4 (Apr – Jun)

We had a wonderful 2 weeks off at Easter and look forward to working hard on the home stretch and preparing ourselves for starting Primary 3 and 4 next year!

Literacy and English – In Literacy we will continue to work on our phonics and spelling following the NL Active Literacy Programme. We will continue with our reading books as part of our daily Literacy work too. We will continue to work on Talk 4 Writing for our extended writing on a Friday morning.

Numeracy and Mathematics –  In Numeracy, Primary 2 will be looking at division by 2 and 10 while Primary 3 explore division with 2,3,4,5 and 10 (we will link this with our times tables work). We will continue to work on our mental maths, number talks and problem solving skills. In Maths, we will be looking at Money, Finance and Chance and Uncertainty.

Health and Wellbeing – This term, we will be looking at more Emotion works and the copying strategies to deal with different emotions. We will also look closely at food safety in realation to our technologies work. In P.E with Mrs Goodwin, we will be practising Tennis skills and learning how to play this sport. With Miss Reid we will be preparing for sports day with our athletic activities.

Social Studies – Our topic this term will be Native Americans. We will focus on the region of the plains for this topic. We will be looking at different tribes, their lifestyles and important features of the plains.

Expressive Arts – Our EA this term will be covered through our topic. We will look at creating songs and dances that link with our Native American topic. For art, we will be creating our own headdresses, tipis, dream catchers and totem poles.

Technologies – This term, we will be looking at food technology. We will create and prepare different foods as well as looking at different appliances.

French – This term, we will look at the weather, classroom objects and food as part of our french topic. If we are lucky, we may even hold a small french cafe for our parents/carers.

We are on the home straight and nearly finished Primary 2 and Primary 3. We can’t wait to learn lots more before the summer holidays! 

Term 3 (Jan-Mar)

We are back after a busy first half of P2/3 and feeling ready to learn after a super Christmas break!

Literacy and English – In Literacy we will continue to work on our phonics and spelling following the NL Active Literacy Programme. We will continue with our reading books as part of our daily Literacy work too. We will be looking at a Scottish Poem ‘My Wee Rid Motor’ by Sandy Thomas Ross and also completing a short book study this term! We will continue to work on Talk 4 Writing for our extended writing on a Friday morning.

Numeracy and Mathematics –  In Numeracy, Primary 2 will be looking at subtraction to 20 and Primary 3 will look at subtraction to 100. We will continue to work on our mental maths, number talks and problem solving skills. In Maths, we will be looking at Angle, Symmetry and Transformation, fractions and we will start looking at time. Primary 2 will look at O’clock and half past, where Primary 3 will look at quarter past and quarter too.

Health and Wellbeing – This term, we will be looking at more Emotion works and the copying strategies to deal with different emotions. We will also look closely at medicine safety and being safe around water. In P.E with Mrs Goodwin, we will be practising our gymnastics skills and continuing our ball skills in Netball with Miss Reid.

Social Studies – For January, we will be studying our home country, Scotland. We will be looking at traditional clothes, dress and food. We will be creating tartan, discussing the location of Scotland in the world and where we live on the island. Later in the term, we will be looking at Shopping as our topic, where we will compare bigger cities to smaller cities and towns.

Expressive Arts – Our EA this term will be covered with our Scottish Celebration where we will perform a song ‘She’ll be coming round Loch Lomond’ a remix of ‘She’ll be coming round the mountains’. We will look at the BBC Let’s Move programme for Drama and we will be focusing on Charles Rennie Mackintosh for our Scottish Artist Study in Art.

Technologies – This term, we will be looking at textile work and patterns. We will start by creating our own tartan by weaving paper and hopefully move onto creating our own cushions.

French – This term, we will look at the calendar as part of our French work. We will also be looking at French food and were going to put on a French cafe for our parents and carers.

We look forward to getting our head down and start a new year with a growth mindset. 

Term 2 (Oct-Dec)

We are so lucky that Miss Dodds is here to help us throughout Term 2. She has lots of exciting activities planned for us and we can’t wait to learn new things. Here is what we are looking forward to learning about this term:

Literacy and English – In Literacy our Book Study will be “The Royal Dinner” by Brenda Parkes. We will be completing various activities around this book study and Miss Dodds has planned lots of fun writing activities for us, such as writing an invitation, a recipe and writing a story about life in a castle. We will continue to work on our phonics and spelling using the NL Active Literacy Approach. Primary 2 will learn (ew, ue, aw, au, ow, ou and oi) and Primary 3 will look at (tch, wa, ea, wr, ie, g and th).  We will continue learning our common words each week.

Numeracy and Mathematics – We will be finishing off our Data Handling work this term, and moving onto Measure with Miss Dodds, We will look at weight, height and mass and we have lots of fun lessons planned for this topic. In Numeracy, Primary 2 will be looking at addition and subtraction to 20 and Primary 3 will look at addition and subtraction to 100. We will continue to work on our mental maths, number talks and problem solving skills.

Health and Wellbeing – This term, we are going to be finishing off our personal hygiene tasks by continuing to look at tooth brushing. We will also learn more about Emotion Works and how to deal with our emotions. In P.E we will be looking at Ball Skills with Miss Reid and Dance with Mrs Goodwin.

Social Studies – Our topic this term is Transport. We will be exploring the 5 different forms of transport – land, air, water, animal powered and human powered. We will look at transport used for emergency services as well as the history and future of transport. We will be going to the transport museum later in the term as part of this topic.

Expressive Arts – Our EA this term will be covered with the Nativity that we will be performing. This year we are doing “It’s a baby!” and will be practising all the songs, lines and actions for this. We are looking forward to the big performance in December!

Technologies – In I.C.T. we are looking at keyboard skills. We are exploring how to type using the home row on BBC Dancemat and will use these skills to type a short story at the end of the term.

French – This term, we will be looking at numbers in French. Primary 2 will explore the teen numbers (11-20) and Primary 3 will look at the numbers to 31. We will be encouraged to use these in our daily routines and continue to consolidate all previous learning.

Enterprise – This term, we continued our Enterprise of the Shoebox Appeal. We collected items that we could pack in shoe boxes to send away to children in other countries that don’t get much for Christmas. We showed empathy towards these children and managed to package up around 25 boxes this year!

We are so excited for a busy year before Christmas, and can’t wait for all our parents/carers/family and friends to see us perform in our Nativity on 12th/13th December.

Term 1 (Aug-Oct)

Literacy and English – In Literacy we are starting with our Book Study “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. We will be completing various activities around this book study as it links closely with our topic of Mini-beasts. Our book study also gives us lots of exciting opportunities for imaginative and functional writing. In spelling, Primary 2 will be focusing on consolidating the joined phonemes learned in Primary 1 and starting Stage 2 of our Active Literacy programme. Primary 3 will also be finishing off a few sounds from Stage 2 Active Literacy before moving onto trickier phonemes in Stage 3.  We will continue learning our common words. Both stages will continue with their learning of common words and spelling rules. In Grammar we will be learning about contractions, how to use apostrophes correctly, homophones, subject/object and some alphabetical order and dictionary skills work.

Numeracy and Mathematics – This term, we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, data handling and Place Value. Primary 2 will be looking at numbers to 100 and Primary 3 will look at numbers to 1000. We will continue to work on our mental maths, number talks and problem solving skills.

Health and Wellbeing – We are starting the term with some circle time to discuss friendships and mental health and well-being. We will also be looking at road safety and entering the road safety competition. We will be looking at team games, problem solving and good team work.

Social Studies – Our topic this term is Mini-beasts. We will be exploring the lifecycle of a tadpole-frog and a caterpillar-butterfly. We will be looking at habitats and where we find these mini-beasts. We will also be going to the forest as part of our topic, to see what we can find in our community!

Interdisciplinary Learning – Most of our IDL will be covered through our Mini-beast topic as we plan to incorporate Drama, Art, Music, Science, Literacy and Health and Wellbeing into our learning. We will also be performing our class assembly on our Mini-beast work.

Religious and Moral Education – We have started by looking at Respect this year. We discussed how children have rights and how they are met. We will also be looking at Harvest this term where we will learn what this festival means to Christians and how it is celebrated.

Technologies – In I.C.T. we are taking our learning of shape in maths and creating 3D models with the shape tool on an application. We will also be practising logging into glow and accessing files using the mouse.

French – We will be learning about greetings in French such as saying, hello, goodbye, thank you and my name is. We will later move onto our numbers and colours in French and this will be adapted into our daily routine.

 

We have a busy term but were looking forward to having a growth mindset and completing all the tasks Miss Reid has in store for us! bee
