Observing living things

Today we visited the caterpillars.  Most of them are in their cocoons now.  We learned that they are now changing into butterflies in their cocoons.  Some of the children thought they looked cosy, some said they were in their sleeping bag and some said they were sleepy and still.  They weren’t wriggling about like before.

Observing living things

Mrs Alexander kindly brought Primary 1’s caterpillars into the nursery for us to observe.  They were wriggling about and were hairy.  At this moment they are kept in a cup so that they can be safe and grow.  Mrs Alexander told us that they will soon go into their cocoon and this is where they change into a butterfly.  When they come out their cocoon they will be beautiful butterflies. We will join Primary 1 children observing this process throughout the next few weeks.

Playing with 3D shapes in the nursery

The children in the nursery have been learning about 3D shapes.  We were learning to identify the shapes and sort them into the correct groups.  We sorted all the shapes that can roll into a group and all the shapes that can stack into a group. We sang out 3D shape song which helped us name our shapes and we made up actions to help us remember these shapes.  We are now planning to go outside to identify and name our 3D shapes in our environment.
