P6 and P7 STEM Science

This week in science primary 6 and primary 7 have been learning about the substances that make up our food. The children discussed the ‘Eatwell Plate’ and examples of foods from each of the main food groups. The children then worked in groups to test food samples for starch and for protein. To carry out the starch test the pupils set up one control experiment, using water, and one starch test, using iodine. Food which contained starch, such as the bread, crackers and banana, turned black when iodine was added. For the protein test the children used samples of yoghurt, sugar solution and orange juice and tested these using urine protein test strips. they were then able to assess the colour change in relation to the protein levels using the colour chart provided.
